Reported By: Anne Ravana Date Aired: 9/19/2008
Maine Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap and municipal workers from around the state are gathering in Bangor this week to plan for what could be a historically large voter turnout in November. They estimate up to 85 percent of eligible voters in Maine could head to the polls. That prediction is in part based on the rise in absentee ballot voting and the involvement of young people in the campaign. College students are eager to register voters, hold early vote drives, knock on doors and make phone calls on behalf of their candidate of choice.

Maine Delegate Reacts to News of Sarah Palin's Daughter
On day one, it was Hurricane Gustav. On day two, it was Hurricane Bristol–as in Bristol Palin, the pregnant 17-year-old unmarried daughter of John McCain’s Vice Presidential pick Sarah Palin. The GOP convention has certainly been fraught with unexpected developments, or “surprises,” as Rick Bennett of Oxford, the former President of the Maine Senate and the state’s representative on the Republican National Committee puts it. But Bennett isn’t expecting the news about Palin’s daughter, or other revelations about the V-P pick’s family, such as her husband’s 22-year-old conviction for drunk driving or an ethics investigation involving the Alaska Governor to hurt presumptive nominee John McCain’s chances with Maine voters, he told me in an interview today at his hotel in Minneapolis. |
